What is a Pipeline

The image of a pipeline calls to mind the idea of a conduit or the concept of deal flow in the sense used by venture capitalists, bankers or even salespeople. We use it to represent the quantity and quality of the entrepreneurs and enterprises in a particular area.

The Pipeline utilizes three dimensions to map the community’s entrepreneurs and enterprises:

  1. The vertical dimension represents the rungs in the skill ladder and sorts entrepreneurs into five skill levels: Rookies, Single A's, Double A's, Triple A's and Major Leaguers.
  1. The horizontal dimension represents the six life cycle stages of the business: Pre-venture, Existence, Early Growth, Expansion, Maturity and Decline.
  1. The depth dimension (or the number within the cells in the two-dimensional graphic below or the height of the bar in the three-dimensional graphic) represents the quantity of entrepreneurs and enterprise in a community or region that occupy a particular segment of the Pipeline.
